Club Spotlight: Soccer Club
Soccer Club meets in the PE gym on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights. Members usually meet at 8 p.m., but if the wheelchair basketball team is in there, members wait until 9 p.m.
The members form bonds with one another through a mutual interest in soccer. Because SMSU does not have a men’s soccer team, this is the only chance many members get to play a sport that they are passionate about.
“Soccer is something I love,” said freshman David Shittu, “and it’s a game of passion.”
The field is a place where members can forget about school and everything and just focus on making a goal.
Shittu mentioned that the weather is not so harsh during the fall, so many people play soccer outside rather than going to the gym. But when winter comes around people can no longer play outside, so during that time the club is much more organized.
Aside from playing in the gym, Shittu mentioned the club competes against other teams at the YMCA.
“Anybody can have a team in the YMCA,” Shittu said, “but we SMSU guys came together and formed a team and we’re doing pretty good in the YMCA’s competition.”
The club plays at the YMCA every Sunday and has won three of the four games they have played before Nov. 8. Shittu mentioned that the first team they played was the most challenging. Other than that they have been drastically defeating the other teams.
Unlike the Rugby Club though, the Soccer Club does not play in any division. Shittu mentioned that he would like to see some recognition for the club and have it be given the chance to compete in a division.
“If we get to play in a division, it would be very awesome for SMSU, because we have a lot of talent here,” Shittu said.
