Are you sick of the hustle and bustle of some of the common areas at SMSU? Although the brown couches in the Student Center have cradled many a napping college student, the noise from ResDining and Starbucks can interrupt those Zzz’s.
However, hidden around campus are a few peaceful areas, tucked away in quiet corners, perfect for studying, relaxing, and yes, even napping.
1. The Natural History Museum. Located in SM 178, this area seems to be a totally different world from the rest of the campus. There is usually a nature documentary as background noise, something soothing to listen to while you sprawl out on the couches.
But other than just relaxing, the museum itself is fascinating. You might end up accidentally learning a few things as you walk around and check out the hands-on-exhibits. There’s even a chess board to make use of, as long as you don’t mind a stuffed owl watching over you.
2. Upper SS Lounges. In the upper floor of SS, in three of the corners of the building, you’ll find comfortable areas furnished with couches, tables, and plants. Since SS is the farthest building from the Student Center, it doesn’t get as much foot traffic as other buildings, and can be a quiet place to relax and unwind.
3. The Library: 2nd and 4th floors. You might be thinking, what about the fifth floor? While it is the highest point on campus, it’s filled with computers and offices. Not the best place to chill. However, the 4th floor has plenty of chairs in the area to the left of the staircase, as well as rows upon rows of bookshelves to hide away in.
The 2nd floor has a nice little area as well, back by the shelves of VHS tapes. Here you can chill in one of the chairs, read a magazine, and marvel at the fact that there are still VHS tapes floating around. The bathroom back there is tucked away and will feel like your own personal rest stop, without another soul around to bother you.
4. The Alumni Heritage Gallery. Located in the upper floor of the Student Center, back behind the Mustang Zone, this little cranny is usually empty, and again, feels worlds apart from the rest of the school. Relax in one of the chairs, try to find the world’s most hidden bathroom, and enjoy the gallery (as long as you’re not creeped out by the mascot costumes on display).
Make use of these peaceful spots around campus to take a load off!
