The plaza outside the McFarland library was lined with rows upon rows tables the other week, all of which were to the official dimensions of one of the world’s most competitive sports- root beer pong.
The women’s rugby team hosted a root beer pong tournament with a St. Patrick’s Day theme on the evening of Mar. 20, with about ten teams in attendance. The entrance fee was $5 to register. Teams of two squared off against each other in an elimination style tournament, with a bracket to determine the winner. The rules in the games were “official”, or at least as official as it can get in root beer pong, and included bounces, re-racks, and the ever so dreaded death cup.
While all teams were given a hat of St. Patrick’s Day apparel for a consolation prize, larger prizes were awarded to the winners. Second to Fourth place were given red solo cup trophies, which were cups mounted on clear candle sticks. The winners of the tournament were each given a green solo cup trophy and $25.
Ryne Myhrberg and Gerry Bockman won the tournament by winning three games in a best out of five final match. Ryne said he would be spending his winnings on “a good meal.”
