Another college year has begun, but how does one stay healthy when junk food and coffee keeps a student fueled? Fear not! There are plenty of ways to stay healthy throughout the year.
Diet: No, you don’t have to live off of carrots and celery sticks, but what you eat affects your health. Start the day with a good breakfast, and vary your food at meal times. Don’t always stand in line for the pasta bar or the grill, and don’t skip meals. Put a limit on caffeinated beverages, junk food, sugary drinks, and alcohol. Water, fruits and vegetables are your best friend when it comes to eating healthy.
The salad bar in Residential Dining isn’t there to look pretty, but if the thought of eating “rabbit food” disturbs you, then take a daily multi-vitamin to make up for the nutrients.
Exercise: No one expects you to run a marathon every day either. But walking to places around town instead of driving is both healthy and a gas-saver. Going to Mike’s Café? It’s a five-minute walk from the dorms. A little bit of exercise everyday goes a long way in college.
Sleep: It’s a foreign word to most college students, but it’s just as important and diet and exercise. Lack of sleep has a big impact on concentration and mood. Make sure to get a full night’s rest every night. Not possible? Short naps can do wonders for energy and stress levels.
Stress: It wears people down and makes them more susceptible to illness. Learn ways to manage stress early on to keep ahead on your health. Breaks, spending time with friends, yoga, and hobbies are a great way to relax and unwind. Understand that you can’t do everything, and learn time management skills.
Illness: First and foremost, always frequently wash your hands with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer if you can’t wash your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth as bacteria can easily enter through these areas. Use antibacterial wipes to clean handles and frequently touched surfaces. If you feel yourself getting sick, it’s up to you to go to health services or the clinic.
