Augustana University holds off Mustangs

The Mustangs have been struggling as of late, but are looking to snap their losing streak against a 2-4 Augustana team.

SMSU received the opening kickoff and was able to put a drive together, moving the ball all the way down to the Augustana 15 yard line.

The drive halted when the Mustangs were unable to convert on a fourth-and-two situation.

The SMSU defense was able to hold Augustana the first two possessions of the game but after a 42 yard gain on third and 17, Augustana was able to punch a score into the endzone.

Neither team could get anything going offensively in the third quarter. Early in the fourth quarter, however, facing third-and-19 from the SMSU three-yard line, Connor Wilkie was intercepted and  Augustana returned the ball seven yards for a touchdown and extend the lead to 16-0.

Entering the fourth quarter, SMSU was on a 10-quarter streak without a touchdown. That changed when the SMSU offense finally broke through to move within one possession of the lead after converting on the two point conversion.

The Augustana offense answered though with a big drive of their own, marching the ball down the field with a lethal air attack. The touchdown pushed the lead  to 23-8.

SMSU seemed to have found their stride offensively, as they again moved the ball inside the Augustana 20 yard line, but a fourth down pass from Wilkie intended for Huot fell incomplete.

The final score was 30-8. SMSU will face off against MSU Mankato on Thursday night at Makke Field. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m.
