NCAA March Madness

The NCAA men’s basketball tournament is nicknamed March Madness, and that nickname held true this year.

The tourney always has its fair share of upsets and high seeds that make magical runs deep into the tournament, but this year has been crazier than normal.

The field of 68 is the tightest it’s been in the history of the tournament. The four number-one seeds combined for the most losses by number one seeds in NCAA tournament history. There was no clear cut favorite to win the whole tournament like in years past making upsets over top seeds even more possible.

The true madness started Thursday, Mar. 17 with Yale, a twelve seed, defeating Baylor, a five seed by a score of 79-75. The next top seed to fall was number-five Purdue to Arkansas Little Rock in double overtime. Perhaps the biggest tournament upset was Middle Tennessee over Michigan State. Michigan State was a top pick by many to win the whole tournament, but Middle Tennessee got hot at the right time to knock them off in the first round.

The Michigan State loss opened the door for the tenth-seeded Syracuse Orange to make a run. After beating the seven seed Dayton Flyers in the first round, the Orange rode that momentum into the next round to defeat the high flying Middle Tennessee Crusaders.

In the Sweet 16, Syracuse defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs 63-60 to move to the Elite 8 where the Orange took down the top seeded Virginia Volunteers, and punched their ticket as the highest seed in the final four.

The first four rounds of the tournament have been as crazy as any tournament in recent memory.

Come Apr. 2, Villanova Oklahoma, Syracuse, and North Carolina will battle it out until only one team remains unbeaten. If the tournament has taught us anything this year, it’s that the impossible is very possible. This year’s final four is setting up to be one to remember.
