SMSU Mustangs beat the Moorhead State Dragons 48-9 at the SMSU Homecoming game on Saturday, Sept. 28.

The Dragons scored a touchdown early in the first quarter. SMSU responded with a 44-yard touchdown pass and the extra point gave them the lead.

The second quarter saw Running Back Davontay Stevens run 38 yards for another touchdown and Quarterback Blake Gimbel scored another with a one yard quarter back sneak. By the end of the second quarter, Mustangs were in the lead 21-9.

Receivers Ty Steffensen, Vernal Wingate, and Tommy Steidler each caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter extending the Mustang lead. Gimbel made a final touchdown pass to Wingate in the fourth quarter, and the extra point gave SMSU an impressive 48-9 lead.

When asked about what it took to score such a big victory, Head Football Coach Cory Sauter said. “I think a big part of it was momentum.”

Early in the first quarter, Mustangs were on fourth down at the 50-yard line. They decided to take a risk by going for it and it paid off. They got the first down and scored a touchdown with the next play.

Two more touchdowns in the second quarter got the crowd excited and the energy in the stands made the atmosphere feel almost electric giving the players momentum going into the second half.

“Any time we play at home, it’s always fun,” Sauter said. “It’s good to feed off of that energy for our guys, and you know our guys want play well in front of our home crowd.”
