The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang women’s basketball team capped their regular season play with a loss to the No. 20 Minnesota State University Mavericks with a final score of 89-58.
A pair of free throws by Hannah Beeler, a layup by Rebekah Rolling, and a 3-pointer by Bree Holleman helped the Mustangs to an early 7-2 lead within the first two minutes of the first half. However, the Mavericks used a 20-0 scoring run over the next six minutes to take over the game with a commanding 25-9 lead. The Mavericks continued to dominate the Mustangs throughout the first half, ending with a 5-0 run in the final two minutes before the half for a halftime score of 23-47. The Mavericks forced 18 turnovers in the first half and converted them into 18 points.
The Mavericks continued to dominate the game throughout the second half, using an early 11-5 run to increase the deficit. Although the Mustangs attempted a comeback on several occasions, they simply weren’t able to overcome the Mavericks, resulting in an 89-58 loss.
The Mustangs were led by Holleman, who recorded 15 points, five rebounds, and two assists. Alison Nagel followed closely behind with 13 points. As a team, the Mustangs finished 20 of 47 from the field. They gave up a season-high 24 turnovers.
With the loss, the Mustangs fall to a record of 4-22 overall and 2-20 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, while the Mavericks improve to 18-10 overall and 15-7 in the NSIC.
