On Saturday, December 8, the Wayne State Wildcats defeated the Southwest Minnesota State University women’s basketball team with a score of 67-50. This marks the Mustangs’ eighth consecutive loss to Wayne State.
Early in the first half, the Mustangs built a 13-9 lead over the Wildcats. However, the Wildcats put together a 16-2 scoring run over the course of the next four minutes to take a 25-15 lead. The Wildcats’ lead grew to as much as 15 points with just under three minutes remaining in the first half. A 5-0 scoring run by the Mustangs cut the deficit to 10 just before the half.
The Mustangs continued to chip away at the Wildcats’ lead during the start of the second half. In fact, the deficit was cut down to just four points after a jumper by Alison Nagel, putting the score at 46-42.
However, the Wildcats did not let the Mustangs get any closer, putting together a 15-4 run over the course of the next six minutes. The Wildcats would not look back for the remainder of the game.
Nagel paced the Mustangs with 17 points, which is her season average. She also pulled down three rebounds and dished out five assists.
As a team, the Mustangs shot 42.6 percent from the floor, but allowed 19 turnovers and made one of 10 shots from behind the arc. With the loss, the Mustangs fall to an overall record of 2-5 and 0-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
