The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang volleyball team ended their season on Friday, December 6 to the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs in three sets, with scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-18.
The Mustangs matched the Bulldogs point-for-point during the first minutes of set one. However, an 11-2 run by the Bulldogs helped them gain a 17-11 lead. The Mustangs tried to paw their way back, but fell short in the end, dropping the first set 25-18.
Throughout the second set, the Bulldogs and the Mustangs mirrored each other in scoring. However, the Bulldogs simply outscored the Mustangs in the end, taking the set 25-22. The subsequent third set was a mirror image of the first set. The Bulldogs defeated the Mustangs 25-18 in the third set to take the match.
The Mustangs finished the match with 21 errors on 116 attacks. McKell Anderson led the Mustang attack with nine kills. Three Mustangs tallied double-digit digs: Whitney Burmeister with 12, Anderson with 11, and Rachel Westby with 11. Emilee Gutzmer put up 26 assists.
With the loss, the Mustangs end their season with an overall record of 24-8, making it the 11th consecutive season with 20 or more victories.
