Championships are in the air apparently as the women’s soccer team here at Southwest Minnesota State University won the last two post-season games, advancing them to the NCAA central region championship game, which will be played in Duluth.
On Nov. 15, Mustang soccer faced off against Central Missouri where they went 3-1 in a huge win to keep the post-season alive coming off of a loss against Upper Iowa in the NSIC Tournament game. Miranda Cadena had two goals with Vanessa Corona bringing in the first goal versus Central Missouri, but despite Centrals slightly better possession of the ball, the Mustangs made the goals that mattered and won, beating the Mules 3-1.
The Mustangs faced their most difficult opponent, Minnesota State – who we tied not too long ago, on Nov. 17. Early in the first half, Corona made the first goal which Mankato was able to tie up on the 69-minute mark. But it was Morgan Weyer-Coates who scored the game-winning goal 22 minutes into the second half. Then it became a game of defense as Brienna Dehkes saved an amazing 17 shots on goals. Dehkes was like an iron curtain stopping shot after shot after shot. The Mustangs defeated the Mavericks with a final score of 2-1.
The women’s soccer team is only one game away from becoming champions in which they will face off against the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs on the Nov. 22.
So cheer on the Mustang Soccer women as they head into their final post-season game.
