Tough loss and impressive victory is what sums up the last two football games played by the SMSU Mustangs. On Oct. 12, the men’s football team played Wayne State and came out ahead in a stunning 55-16 victory. Charlie Kern threw for four touch downs and ran it in for two more while Tyler Tonderum also ran one in during the second quarter, where he expanded the lead from 21-10 to 27-10. The rest of the game went along similarly, with the Mustangs scoring in every quarter and just pouring it on Wayne State.
Last Saturday, the Mustangs faced off against Mankato State and lost 55-27. What seemed to be a reverse of the game the week before, the SMSU mustangs struggled to stop the Mankato offense – allowing 35 points before the end of the second half of the game. The Mustangs offense scored their first touchdown towards the beginning of the 3rd quarter. But by then it was too little too late, while they scored 27 points in the second half, Mankato State scored an additional 17 points.
But one shouldn’t think it was lack of defense that lost this game either, Tate Bunkers had an amazing 12 tackles versus Mankato State. Aj Page and Jared Twedt both had 9 tackles and Dashawn Miller had a sack for a loss of 14 yards.
Though the team played hard, it wasn’t enough to take the win.
Next week the men’s football team will travel to play Upper Iowa where the Mustangs are looking for a win to change the momentum and finish the last few games of the season strong.
