A solid day of pitching for Rachel Hoeppner helped the Mustangs sweep the Northern State Wolves in their doubleheader on Saturday, April 27. Hoeppner pitched a two-hit shutout in game one and the entire second game. She led the Mustangs to a 2-0 win in game one and a 5-3 win in game two.
Senior Amy Dreessen helped the Mustangs jump to a 1-0 lead when she blasted out an RBI double, scoring Shelbie Stoll, who was on second. This would mark Dreessen’s 33rd double and 92nd RBI of her career. Her double would move her up to fourth place all-time in SMSU history, as well as ninth in RBIs.
Morgan Peterson hit her seventh home run of the season, sending the ball over the centerfield fence. Peterson’s home run would give the Mustangs a 2-0 lead over the Wolves. In the seventh inning, Hoeppner walked the first two batters, but gained momentum to close out her first shutout of the season.
In game two, the Wolves took advantage of Hoeppner’s pitching errors, recording five hits and three runs in the first inning. However, Hoeppner gained control and did not allow any more runs for the rest of the game.
With the bases loaded and two outs on the board, Morgan Peterson blasted her eighth home run of the season to score in the third inning, giving the Mustangs a 4-0 lead. The Mustangs would add to their lead in the fifth as Bailie Sheahan, a pinch runner, was scored by Jennifer Johnson.
Hoeppner closed out the game, not allowing any Wolves to score. Hoeppner finished the game, allowing ten hits, three earned runs, two walks, and two strikeouts. With the wins, the Mustangs improve to 16-21 overall and 10-16 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
