The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang softball team split a doubleheader with St. Cloud State University on Sunday, April 7. The Mustangs took the first game 7-5 before falling 13-7 to the Huskies in game two.
Chelsey Rodenkirch led the Mustangs in game one, going 2 for 3 and scoring one run, a double, and an RBI. Morgan Peterson recorded two RBIs on a set of walks.
In game two, the Mustang offense was spot-on, but the pitching did not quite match-up. Rachel Groff, starting pitcher for SMSU, was replaced after a third of an inning after allowing four runs and three walks. Groff took the loss for the Mustangs. Katie Herron filled in for Groff, allowing nine runs and walking six.
Kaley Scearcy and Amy Dreessen blasted a pair of hits apiece, while Shelbie Stoll went 1 for 2, recording a two-run homer, two runs scored, and a walk.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to an overall record of 11-13 and 4-8 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
The Mustangs resumed play on Sunday, April 14 in a doubleheader against the University of Minnesota- Crookston. SMSU swept the Golden Eagles in the match-up, winning game one 5-4 and game two 10-0.
In game one, Groff pitched five innings of relief after filling in for Rachel Hoeppner. Groff allowed two earned runs and picked up two strikeouts. Jennifer Johnson went 3 for 4 from the plate. Rodenkirch scored 2 runs and went 2 for 3 from the plate, in addition to picking up 2 RBIs and a walk.
The Mustangs picked up the first run in the bottom of the second inning after an RBI double by Katelyn Kalkman to left center field. The Mustangs would go on to pick up runs in the third and fifth innings. They took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth before picking up two additional runs. Rodenkirch knocked out an RBI single to left field, scoring Kalkman and Stoll.
The Golden Eagles put up five runs in the seventh inning, cutting the Mustang lead.
