In the final Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game of the 2012-2013 regular season, the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs fell to the Minnesota State University Mavericks 80-62.
The Mustangs had a strong first half, shooting 64 percent from the field and connecting on 2 of 8 3-pointers. SMSU was down just four points at the half.
Early in the second half, the Mavericks began to pull away, increasing their lead from four to 23 in just the first eight minutes. The Mavericks wouldn’t look back for the remainder of the game, defeating the Mustangs 80-62. MSU outscored SMSU 42-28 in the second half.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs finished the game with a 56.3 shooting percentage, compared to MSU’s 50.8 percent. The Mustangs also out rebounded the Mavericks 27-26.Four Mustangs recorded double-digit scoring, including Alison Nagel with 13 points, Rebekah Rolling and Mikayla Saathoff with 11 points apiece, and Ellen Degler with 10.
With the loss, the Mustangs fall to a record of 4-24 overall and 2-20 in the NSIC, while the Mavericks improve to 22-4 overall and 18-4 in the NSIC.
