The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s soccer team defeated Minnesota State University- Moorhead 3-0 on Sunday, Oct. 14. As if shutting out the Dragons was not impressive enough, all three goals were scored in under three minutes.
The Mustangs and the Dragons remained competitive throughout the first half, each fending off scoring attempts by the other. However, due to the wind, both teams were unable to fire off many shots. In the first half, SMSU attempted only one shot, while MSUM attempted two.
At the 67th minute, the Mustangs began their scoring streak that would seal the game for them. Miranda Cadena connected with the back of the net during the 67th minute. Cadena was assisted by Kendahl Fisher. A little over a minute late, Cadena scored once again, with another assist from Fisher. This was Cadena’s sixth goal of the season.
Seconds later, SMSU’s Danica Requejo used the strong wind to her advantage, kicking from the 40-yard line and scoring. This was Requejo’s first goal of the season.
Goalkeeper Sonya Smith recorded five saves during the matchup against MSUM. The Mustangs improve to a record of 7-5-1 overall and 5-5-1 in the NSIC. The Dragons fall to 4-9-1 overall and 3-7-1 in the NSIC.
