Women have worked so hard to procure the right to vote, to be treated (almost) equal to men, to get a job, and so many other things. The history that we women have is important for others to know and learn about, just as any other gender is especially since we are still working towards becoming truly equal.

The problem with Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day is that it is separating us from other genders. Men do not have a month for their history, and their International Day receives hardly any publicity (I had to google if all of these even had one). LGBQT+ members do not have an International Day (coming out day is not the same), but they do have the month of October. I don’t feel equal to other genders when we do not all get treated the same in this area.

For me, this is the same with race. We recently completed Black History Month, but when is White History Month? There isn’t one. Or what about every other race, like Asian and Mexican? May is Asian History Month, but again, is hardly known about. There is the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries in September as well, but none of them reach the level of Black History Month. Again, this attempt to make things more equal does not meet expectations.

During an iterview with Mike Wallace, Morgan Freeman had the best quote on this idea.

“I don’t want a Black History Month. Black history is American history. [To end racism] Stop talking about it. I’m going to stop calling you a white man, and I’m going to ask you to stop calling me a black man. I know you as Mike Wallace. You know me as Morgan Freeman. You want to say ‘Well, I know this white guy named Mike Wallace.’ You know what I’m saying.”

Women’s history is America’s history, just as much as men’s history and black history. I love Women’s History Month, but I want every other gender and race to feel the same feeling I do during their months.

I understand the reasoning behind why some races/genders/religions don’t have special days or months, but I don’t find that to be a show of equality. In my opinion, if you’re going to assign special months and days for certain genders/religions/races, every single one needs to be covered.
