Colin Kaepernick protest affects all
October 6, 2016
Anyone who considers themselves a football fan has heard of the debate surrounding Colin Kaepernick’s protest. The once great 49ers Quarterback simply takes a knee during the national anthem and has turned heads with his police brutality protest and that is exactly what he wanted.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color.” Kaepernick said in an interview following the preseason game in which his protest started.
This protest has sparked enormous backlash for Kaepernick. New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees had mixed eelings.
“I agree with his protest, I don’t agree with his method.,” Brees said.
Many NFL fans feel the same way.
Kaepernick has been hounded by opposing teams fans to stand up and stop being so disrespectful to the flag and the country.
That being said, Kaepernick has also gotten support for his protest, ranging from other players on the 49ers and other teams, to even veterans of the military that say it is his right to choose whether or not he stands for the national anthem and that is what they fought for. The Seahawks did a “protest of unity” following Kaepernick’s protest by locking arms with one another during the playing of the national anthem.
No matter anyone’s personal opinion on Kaepernick’s protest, it cannot be denied that he has gotten the attention of the entire country, and that is exactly what he planned to do.
