By the time this issue is released, Advising Day will already have passed. How did you spend it? Many students see Advising Day as a freebie of sorts, a day without classes for hanging out with fellow students and friends or binge-watching your favorite show on Netflix. While this is something you can do, Advising Day exists for a reason.
As a student at SMSU, this day is meant to serve you, to help you get a grip on your next semester and the classes you will be taking. The professors are doing this for your benefit, so why not take ten minutes of your time to participate?
The English Department gives a little incentive to the majors that attend: Pizza arrives around noon, and is served with other treats such as soda and cookies. Other departments have their own ways of going about advising. Maybe it is one big advising group of professors, or maybe it’s one-on-one meetings with your personal advisor. Either or, you should still take the time to be advised, because what if you are missing that one class needed to graduate, and it’s not offered next semester? What kind of classes are best for a sophomore? What if your DARs looks like a mess? All of these things can be helped if you just get advised.
Even if you feel that you have a total grip on your schedule and have all of your classes picked out, it is still good to talk to a professor to see what future classes you will be taking. You don’t want to be stuck here a semester more than you have to, even if SMSU is the best university around.
As stated earlier, Advising Day is over and done with, but that doesn’t mean that there won’t be one this next semester. So be sure to attend the next one because you never know what might happen, and it’s always nice to know that everything will be all right.
