Following Student Senate elections from April 14 to 18, Shenal Alexander Peries and Hudson Ayers race for student treasurer. Peries is a second year Data Science and Finance major from Sri Lanka. Ayers is a third-year student majoring in Biology from Ortonville, MN.
Travelling from Sri Lanka, Peries chose SMSU because it was affordable and the friendly nature of the people here. He said, “It felt like home right away.”
Peries’ qualifications is his involvement with clubs on campus, such as Pickleball Club and Student Government. He’s helped the clubs manage budgets and plan events, so he says, “I know how things work.”
He wants to make funding clubs easier and more transparent so students can easily find where their money is going. Peries promises to work closely with student organizations and to be transparent with how and where student funds are being used.
Ayers’ bio on the candidates section of SMSU’s site, says, “I would like to be the treasurer for student senate as I believe it would be a great opportunity for me to take on a leadership role. I’m interested in being able to manage the budget and have an impact on student activities.”
“I’ll always listen, be honest, and make sure your voice is heard when it comes to funding and events,” Peries says.
He wants to make his worth clear: “I love helping people, and [I] want to support more fun and useful things on campus. I care, I’m involved, and I’ll work hard for everyone.”
Peries’ competitor, Hudson Ayers, did not answer interview questions by press time.
