Sherman Alexie is a Native American novelist, poet, short story writer and filmmaker whose writings draw from his experiences as an Indigenous American. Recently, Alexie was accused of sexual harassment against several women, one of whom is Litsa Dremousis.

Dremousis had a consensual affair with Alexie in the past and claimed numerous women spoke to her about Alexie’s behavior. Her response was initially posted on her Facebook page and was reprinted in The Stranger on March 1.

On Feb. 28, Alexie published a statement in the  Seattle Times regarding the claims in which he rejected “the accusations, insinuations, and outright falsehoods” that were made by another writer. He also acknowledged that he has hurt people over the years.

Alexie is the author of several well-known books, including The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven.

Fallout from these accusations include the Institute of American Indian Arts renaming the Alexie Scholarship as the MFA Alumni Scholarship, the blog Native Americans in Children’s Literature removing all references to Alexie, and the American Library Association is reconsidering their awarding of the Carnegie Medal to Alexie for You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me: A Memoir according to the Seattle Times.

As of writing, Alexie is the latest of prominent figures who have been accused of sexual assault in the #MeToo movement.
