On Oct. 24, Student Senate voted in favor of two spontaneous requests for the Sociology Club and the Philosophy Club. The senate also discussed the issue of student turnout for events on campus that involve diversity and inclusion.

The Sociology Club was granted a spontaneous request of $1,500 for travel and lodging costs. The Sociology Club plans to attend a conference, and they got a few suites for their members. However, their membership almost doubled, and so they needed funding for another room. Also, the Sociology Club plans to use the money to organize a fundraiser for hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico.

The Philosophy Club was given $600 dollars for their request. This was given to help alleviate a deficit that the club had due to unexpected expenses with a guest speaker they brought on campus last spring.

Finally, Ola Abimbola started a discussion in the student senate about how the Office of Diversity and Inclusion has had difficulty with student turnout. Their events tend to attract students that are only from the specific minority that the program spotlights. For example, the recent performance of Frank Waln and Lumhe Sampson was attended mainly by members of the Access Opportunity and Success program, the ODI, the Oyate Club, and the UGLYS. The office is looking for ways to increase the diversity of those attending the events that center around diversity.
