Crowell marks 20 years as advisor

Associate Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students Scott Crowell is entering his 20th year as advisor to the Student Association.

Scott Crowell started as the financial aid counselor at Iowa State University. He took over the financial aid office of Northeast Iowa Community College for four years before coming to SMSU. Crowell has been at SMSU for 24 years and has over 30 years of experience in Student Affairs.

Student Affairs is an office devoted to the success and growth of students. Crowell defines student affairs as any assistance offered to the student outside of the classroom.

Student affairs includes 13 different departments directly related to student success. These departments aren’t limited to residential life, health services and dining services. Student affairs exists to offer students whatever assistance they need to complete their academic goals.

Where classroom and academic help ends, student affairs begin. Counseling, career services, and the child care center are all run by student affairs and overseen by Crowell. Events like the upcoming Family Weekend and Homecoming are overseen by Crowell and the office of Student Affairs.

Student Affairs also works to ensure that each student feels recognized and understood.  Diversity and Inclusion is one department that works to make sure students are represented. Student Judicial Affairs and student government are dedicated to giving all students a voice. Student Judicial Affairs also works with the department of Public Safety to keep the campus safe.

Disability services ensures that SMSU is accessible for students with disabilities.  Student Affairs works to ensure that every student has the opportunity to pursue their academic goals.
