Criminal Justice Club to co-host sexual assault awareness 5k
Southwest Minnesota State University’s Criminal Justice Club is partnering with New Horizon’s Crisis Center, along with several other clubs, to host a Sexual Assault Awareness 5k.
The president of the Criminal Justice Club Sam Foy says that the 5k is to raise awareness of sexual assault and its victims.
“The idea came from a similar event that was organized a few years ago by the Criminal Justice Club’s advisor, BC Franson, who had one of her classes set it up,” Foy said. “When we heard about this we thought that having our own 5k to raise awareness for sexual assault would be a great way to have a positive impact on the community.”
Foy also said that it’s become clear that sexual assault is an extremely challenging issue, not only on college campuses but in communities across the country.
“By coming to this event, people will learn that this crime is a growing issue, but one that can be stopped,” Foy said. “They will be informed on what is happening on college campuses, who it affects, and how they can make a difference. They will also have the opportunity to make a direct impact by donating clothing that can be used by victims.”
The 5k will be taking place on Saturday, April 8 at the North parking lot near the Social Sciences building on campus. Registration for the run/walk will begin at 9 a.m. near the SS lot. The requirement to register is to bring an unused clothing item.
“The reason for this is that sexual assault victims are forced to give up their clothes for evidence when they go to the hospital. All clothing will be donated to the Emergency Room at the Avera Clinic here in Marshall,” Foy said.
The 5k is expected to start at 10 a.m. and the anticipated end time is 11:30 a.m. There will be activities set up for those that finish early. There will also be a raffle for everyone who participated in the event once most people are finished.
The event will conclude with a guest speaker who is coming to campus to talk about the effects of the crime of sexual assault.
