Fresh Check Day to be held Nov. 2
For many years, the thought of mental health and the illnesses that can go with it have had a bad stigma around them. People like SMSU University Counselor Dr. Sara Fier are working to change that.
“At least half of us have a diagnosable mental health concern at some point in our lives,” Fier said. “In addition, the college years are a vulnerable time for mental health concerns to develop.”
It can take people a while to realize the severity of a situation or condition, especially if they are busy. People need the opportunity to check in with themselves about their mental health. Mental health screenings and events like Fresh Check Day provide that.
On Nov. 2, SMSU will have its first Fresh Check Day. This fair-like event goes on from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Upper Student Center. It is being hosted by SMSU Counseling & Testing Services in conjunction with the Jordan Porco Foundation.
The goal of this event is to create an approachable atmosphere for both students and staff at SMSU. This program was founded to bring awareness to coping strategies, the signs of mental health problems, and to where resources can be found to help with mental health.
“It provides participants the opportunity to learn about mental health and wellness topics, while participating in fun activities, enjoying free food and having the opportunity to win prizes,” Fier said.
Prizes that will be awarded that night include a 32-inch TV and a scholarship. There will also be over 15 different booths there, and each one is held by a different organization on campus. Without the help of these organizations, along with many other campus and community resources, the counseling and testing services would not have been able to do this event.
