Following a move from its old location off Main Street to within the high school last summer, public access channel Studio 1 is preparing for another relocation to within SMSU.

Studio 1, an entity of the City of Marshall’s Community Services department, will be relocated to part of SMSU’s post office and duplicating services office, in BA 175 and 174 respectively.

Studio 1 manager Alex Peterson is excited abut the move. Peterson estimates that the move should be complete in a month or two.

“The idea of the move to the university is that we could use the equipment at the university,” Peterson said. “We want to give both college and high school students another opportunity to work in a real-world environment with real-life productions.”

The move does not only benefit students. Peterson hopes the move will help bring the entire Marshall community closer together.

Studio 1 offers free services to the whole community—anyone from the area that has a non-commercial project they want done can stop in at Studio 1 and use the equipment to help with their film.

“Our goal is to open [Studio 1] up to the whole community,” Peterson said. “We want to help students get experience first, but we want it to help everybody.”

Right now, Studio 1 broadcasts the local government public access channel, the high school’s Tiger TV, and works with SMSU Media. Studio 1 has plans to eventually open up future training programs to the community as a whole, instead of just students.

Peterson thinks Studio 1’s move into SMSU is definitely for the better.

“[Being located at SMSU] will let us get more programs out, things the community will be interested in,” Peterson said. “It will make the community want to watch our channel.”
