Vandalism, Police Officers at SMSU
On Saturday, Sept. 26, the weekend of SMSU’s homecoming, two car windows were shattered, one at 12:20 p.m. and another later in the day. Adjacent to the Campus Religious Center on Birch Street, a window to a car was shattered with either a rock or an airsoft gun.
The crime was reported to campus security, who then called the Marshall Police Department (MPD). Director of Public Safety Mike Munford was notified by the MPD.
This crime was followed by a similar one in the C Parking Lot on the SMSU campus. While nothing was taken in either car, one of them was occupied when the window smashing occurred. These crimes are still under investigation. There are no suspects nor witnesses.
Munford encourages anyone with any knowledge about it to report it online anonymously or to call him at 507-537-7252.
The next weekend on Saturday, Oct. 3, police officers were called to the Buckingham dorm to investigate a call about gun shots heard from a young man’s room. SMSU Public Safety was also called to come to Buckingham to respond to the call.
The sound was heard while the young man was sleeping. Police officers as well as Public Safety found nothing to suspect that there was a gun fired around the dorms.
“There was no disturbance nor gunshots on our campus,” Munford said.
While there was actually nothing there, Munford encourages people to respond to their instincts and call the police if they feel in danger.
“The reality is, we live in a post-9/11 world and we have to be vigilant,” Munford said. “Any time that you believe something of that nature is in progress, call 911. With the information he thought he knew, [the caller] did the right thing.”
