A new semester for the Student Senate brings new topics for discussion. The Minnesota state Legislature will be deliberating on whether to grant a tuition freeze on MnSCU schools. The Student Senate will be expected to deliberate and vote on room and board and other rate increases in the near future.
The Minnesota State University Student Association (MSUSA), which represents the student body of MnSCU universities, saw the withdrawal of Minnesota State University Mankato and St. Cloud State. This was due to a secret Facebook group that was created that they thought violated codes of conduct.
After an investigation, disciplinary actions were taken. SMSU was not involved.
As a result, the February Delegates Assembly may not be held since the two schools are suspending their participation from MSUSA and won’t be in a place to send delegates. A mediator may be brought in resolve the present trust issues.
“We’re kind of at a standstill just waiting to hear what Mankato and St. Cloud would like to do to move forward,” President Rachael Posusta said at the meeting.
The Student Senate will be evaluating the effectiveness of LEP classes (first and fourth year seminars) this semester. They will be starting with the students to find out what they think, and where they would like to get out of these classes. This project will be taken up by University Affairs with input from all members of the Student Senate.
