The SMSU residence halls were home to hordes of raving monsters this past weekend… some were out to scare the throngs of children running wild from dorm to dorm, others to entertain them.
On Sunday, Oct. 26, from 5-7 PM, the residence halls on campus hosted their 16th annual ResHALLoween trick-or-treat event for the community. The theme of the decorations was based on the Pixar film “Monster’s University.”
The event invited children grades K-6 to visit the campus, asking only a $1 fee or a non-perishable food item for the local foodshelf. Parents and children lined up at Commons Central to register and get a map of participating dorms.
Some of the residence halls, such as Kamasutra and Sweetland, were marked as the scary dorms, in which those brave enough to enter were led on a tour through darkened hallways, past costumed SMSU students.
Others were not aimed to scare, but simply to revel in the halloween spirit, giving out candy or hosting games. Aquarius offered pumpkin painting, as well as a game similar to pin the tale on the donkey, except with a ghost and pumpkin. Camaraderie had a similar game in which kids pressed an eyeball (a paper plate with tape on the back) onto a green tentacled monster (a paper cutout taped to the window).
Another attraction was the maze in the field in between Commons West and Central, with the walls made of plastic bags.
The event had a sizeable showing, with children in a variety of costumes.
Just remember: they scare because they care!
