Do you write? If so, when did you start? When you started, what do you think of that first piece, whether it was a poem, a story, a fan-fiction, or a play? Horrible? Now think of yourself reading that in front of an audience, laughing with the crowd as you read what your nine-year-old self thought of so long ago. That is Mortified. Mortified is the name given to a reading where the participants bring in some of their old works and read them out loud to a group. Unedited and embarrassing. The intent isn’t to point and laugh at the person reading, but at what they’re reading.
The SMSU English Club is hosting their own Mortified reading on Thursday, Sept. 18th at 7PM. The reading will be held in the CH 201 lecture hall. It is free to attend, and anyone is welcome to read. The English Club is embarrassing themselves for the amusement of others in the hope of being able to attend future conventions. This event is being treated as a fundraiser, but no money is required to attend. Come laugh with us!
Mortified engages in a variety of different events. Their main focus is on stage shows, which occur in cities throughout the U.S., including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The event that the English Club is hosting isn’t quite as big as that, as it is not directly associated with Mortified.
This program has also produced a documentary entitled “Mortified Nation”. It is a collection of adults reading some of their most embarrassing work. This title is available on Netflix, as well as iTunes and Amazon.
They are also producing a television series entitled “The Mortified Sessions,” which features celebrities from other shows joining the movement and reading their old work. The show is available on iTunes.
The website for Mortified, www.getmortified.com, is home to plenty of entertaining videos and examples of readings much like the one set to take place here on campus.
