So those of you who went to advising day may have noticed that there were no classes offered. In fact they are cancelling all of the majors and minors except for the LEP courses. So everyone’s worst nightmares have come true.
Well not completely, true several minors were cut, but what else did we learn on advising day? Probably the biggest change was in fact the lack of classes offered or that the classes’ credit load changed. This may have not been the case for every major or program offered but for some it was a wake up story.
Take me for example, just your average double major in Professional Writing and Creative Writing. I had all my courses planned out by the beginning of this spring semester. Then I look at the courses offered for next semester to find out it had all changed. If you were or are in a program that requires English classes you may have noticed that each semester several workshops are offered. The typical ones were: writer’s workshop, poetry workshop, fiction workshop, non-fiction workshop and so on. And typically two of these if not more were offered every semester, but now only one will be offered each semester. Which for Creative Writing majors is crazy. Because Creative Writing majors have to take at least four of these classes. So if you are a just walking into the program next semester and you have a scheduling conflict you have to go here one more semester. True some departments work with each other to make sure that scheduling conflicts happen less often but that doesn’t mean every department does. Typically you will have only programs that are relatable talking to each other. What happens now if a business major wants to pick up a writing minor now?
This scenario might not be world ending or even as dramatic as google pretending to crash. But for some it might mean that they are not able to finish their degree because of the more drawn out method the school is, even unwilling, enforcing.
