As part of the “Viewer Discretion Advised” events, two members from the PFLAG (Parents, Family & Friends of Lesbians and Gays) group, Sue Morton and Beth Collins, were on campus Tuesday, Feb. 26 to discuss same-sex marriage.
The presentation started with a Paul Wellstone quote: “If we don’t fight hard enough for the things we stand for, at some point we have to recognize that we don’t really stand for them.”
The discussion included the results of the recent election, defining the issue, identifying audience and making sure the goal is heartfelt and winnable.
The goal is to pass a bill that will allow same-sex couples to be married in Minnesota.
Morton explained the importance of talking to legislators and getting the story out there. The key to getting a message across is to use civil dialogue, she said.
“We don’t want to be seperate, but equal…we want to be equal,” Morton said.
