Since the last publishing of the Spotlight Article, former  Congressman and Governor of South Carolina Mark Sanford has dropped out. Before that, former Texas Representative Beto O’Rourke dropped out. There are now 17 Democrats and three Republicans.

This week’s candidate is no stranger to U.S. politics. Joseph Biden was born on November 20, 1942, in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and lived there until about 10 years old. His family then moved to Delaware. He attended the University of Delaware with a double major in political science and history before furthering his education at Syracuse University by earning a law degree. He became a lawyer in 1969.

Biden’s first campaign was for New Castle County Council in Deleware, which he won by 2,000 votes. Biden prides himself on having fought for “the little guy” while he was serving on the council. In 1972, Biden announced he was running for the United States Senate and became one of the youngest people elected at age 29. Shortly after, his wife and daughter were killed in a car accident.

Senator Biden held his seat in the Senate until 2009, when he was elected Vice President alongside President Barack Obama; the duo was reelected in 2012. By mid-April of this year, former Senator and Vice President Joe Biden announced his candidacy for President of the United States.

Many people view former Vice President Biden as a front runner, however, the Democratic party is changing, and democrats argue that he does not represent the changing style of their party.
