40 years ago: Southwest State University’s wrestling teams took second place Northern Collegiate Conference wrestling Championship. This was the highest place finish the Mustangs had ever attended in the annual conference. Scott Dubbelde took home an individual championship in the 158 pound class after defeating Tom Moore of Bemidji State 11-7. Other wrestlers who had notable finishes were Dan Lee and Les Plumley who each took second in their respective classes. With this placement, the wrestling team warranted an invitation to National NAIA meet.

30 years ago: The economic impact of Southwest State University helped circulate over an estimated 22.8 million through the Marshall area. This was 2.6 million more than what the impact was the year prior. There were three main sources that 22.8 million had an impact on. Income to area businesses, income to area people, and employment to on the local economy. 130 additional jobs in the area were attributed to the presences of SSU, not including the 375 jobs on campus.

20 years ago: Southwest University’s guards Dani Cole, of the women’s basketball team and Adam Tesch, of the mens team had record setting years that culminated in their game against Minnesota-Morris. With the six assists Coleman had that night, her career total was at 347, she passed Lillie Brown. who held the previous record of 341 assists. Coleman and the Mustangs would go on to slaughter Minnesota-Morris 79-35. Tesch was on fire from beyond the arc and hit ten three’s that beat out Jeff Timonen’s record of nine. Tesch would go on to score a career high of 32.

10 years ago: The men’s basketball team won their first two big NSIC games over the Duluth Bulldogs and the Bemidji State Beavers. In their game against the Bulldogs, the Mustangs were led by Scott Roehl who scored a team high eighteen points to go along with 12 rebounds. The Mustangs would top the Bulldogs 84-67. In the game against the Beavers the Mustangs were lights out from the field. Jordan Miller hit five three’s, Trent Carlson added three three’s of his own. Roehl would follow up his stellar performance against the Bulldogs with 15 points against the Beavers.

1 year ago: In one of their first series last year the Mustang’s Baseball team split even with Augustana in a double header. Two runs came in the second after Tanner Neale hit and RBI single that scored two runs. They scored another two runs in the third. Ryan Engels scored his first career homerun. the last run of the game, that would close out the game 8-6 for a Mustangs win. The Mustangs would go on to drop their second game against Augustana, but they moved on to a record of 3-1 in the NSIC conference.
