SMSU’s theater program is one of the many programs that are invited to the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival (KCACTF) where Midwest College students can come together and see what other colleges are doing with their theater programs.
A group of SMSU students went to the festival and one of them won three awards, two for Stage Management for the 2024 Spring Semester’s play, An Inspector Calls, as well as the 2024 Fall Semester’s Play, 46 Plays for America’s First Ladies. Lastly an award for Props and Puppet Design for 46 Plays for America’s First Ladies. The collector of these awards being Oliva Houseman.
Houseman is a sophomore Theater Arts major who is extremely passionate about her work here at SMSU. Being a stage manager takes lots of hard work and good communication.
“The job of the stage manager is responsible for coordinating all theatrical elements that bring together a production” said Houseman when asked about her job. With all the hard work that goes into a play, such as having the actors and stagehands being where they need to be, making sure the play has proper lighting, all while being ready for any unexpected issues.
“I hope to continue to learn and expand my skills in more areas of theater so that I can further build upon my experience as a stage manager.” said Houseman on what she wants to do in the future. As of now Houseman is once again the stage manager for the 2025 Spring Semester’s play, Shout: A Mod Musical, as well as in the box office for Drama Club’s two one act shows. Laundry and Burbon, and Lone Star. Good luck to Houseman and the cast of all the shows on campus!
