Hostiles is an entertaining, albeit steady, ride of a movie
Christian Bale is formally known for some of his bigger roles as Batman in the Dark Knight Trilogy, or as a magician in The Prestige, alongside Hugh Jackman. But, in 2018, Christian Bale returns to the screen in a Civil War uniform and with some stellar facial hair. Hostiles, directed by Scott Cooper, is a story in 1892 about a well respected Union captain (Bale) who reluctantly agrees to escort one of his past enemies, the Cheyenne chief played by Wes Studi, and his family through dangerous territory back to their sacred lands in Montana.
For those who are squeamish, this is the not a movie I would suggest watching, but for those with stronger stomachs, I highly recommend taking the time. This movie starts off with a pleasant and peaceful view of a family living their lives in the new territory of New Mexico. There is risk living in new territory, and help is at least a half a day away. After being attacked by the Buffalo Man (David Midthunder) and his posse, for the family’s resources, the only one left alive is the mother, Rosalia Quaid (Rosamund Pike).
As the captain and his men begin their travel with the chief and his family chained to their horses, they stumble upon a burnt cabin with Mrs. Quaid still inside, in shock and doubt. The captain comforts Mrs. Quaid and brings her back to the camp to travel along with the captain and chief to Montana. It is made known that there is danger around every corner from all forms of people and nature.
Overall, Hostiles is a very steady film that does not keep you on the edge of your seat, but it does not bore you either. It keeps you comfortably seated and wondering what will happen next. My biggest issue with this movie would have to be that, half of the time, I could not hear or understand Christian Bale on screen because his character was so soft-spoken.
However, it is filled with amazing cinematic scenes, a great story, outstanding character development, and awesome action sequences. If you are looking for a good popcorn flick, this is a good one to check out.
