Since its release on Aug. 25 and earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver” has defied expectations and thrilled audiences with its innovative integration of subtle choreography and an energetic soundtrack into a fast-paced crime story.

In the simplest of terms, “Baby Driver” is a film about a getaway driver. After a car accident that left him with constant ringing in his ears and without parents, the main character becomes obsessed with driving and music. This is where a crime boss, who is fond of nicknames, finds Baby. Under Doc’s direction, Baby and a rotating cast of criminals pull off a series of bank heists.

While the plot of “Baby Driver” is only just beyond cliche, the pace of the film and clever choreography raise it above its competitors. Every movement in every scene is timed with the script and soundtrack, though they are natural enough to keep it from feeling like a dance number. The songs themselves emulate the emotions of each character without speaking their thoughts directly.

Combining the genres of crime, musical and comedy, “Baby Driver” is a smartly written film that will need to be viewed several times over to be properly appreciated.
