Some people go all their lives before they see or hear fantastic art. This isn’t exactly like that, but it’s close.
Freak Kitchen is a band from Sweden that formed in 1992. They are categorized as experimental rock, but actually branches off to several other genres as well. They do focus on rock and metal, mostly.
What really struck me about this band is just how crazy fun their music is while also tackling some important issues in their music, including capitalist society and racism. Other songs are just fun and interesting.
But they were formed in 1992, why do they matter now? Well, they just released their new album, Cooking with Pagans, earlier this year, and to help promote it, they got famous Spanish artist and animator, Juanjo Guarnido, to make a music video for their single “Freak of the Week.”
Guarnido has worked on many things, including Disney films like Tarzan and some work for Marvel Comics. He has his own comic book series called Blacksad that he does the art for, and a different person does the story.
The music video was crowd-funded on Kickstarter and finally made its release by the end of October. And it’s epic. If anyone is a fan of Don Bluth (The Land Before Time, Secret of NIMH, Titan A.E.) than the animation alone will probably get you excited.
The obviously Bluth-inspired animation is coupled with Freak Kitchen’s song “Freak of the Week,” which is a hilarious look at modern internet fame and how to achieve it. You could work hard and maybe become an internet idol, or you could be a freak of the week, get tons of views, and be forgotten by the next week.
Only after the music video was released to Youtube did the band catch my eye, and now I don’t see myself losing track of them anytime soon. And I don’t think you should either.
