Trombones, percussion and brass instruments alike lit up CH 201 March 1 with a number of hits for the annual Day of Trombone and Friends.
The Southwest Minnesota State University Music Program presented Senior Airman, Trent Lockhart (trombone), as part of the 2014 Guest Artist Series. Lockhart spent the day working with SMSU students and faculty as well as other community members and later followed in three performances.
Performing four tunes – “Daybreak”, “Basta”, “First Song” and “Etoile Des Profondeurs” – in his solo recital, Lockhart joined SMSU faculty members, Dr. John Ginocchio and Dr. David Peterson for the faculty recital. Tunes performed included the theme from The Muppet Show, “Czech Suite”, “Concerto for Trombone”, “Fantasy for Trombone and Orchestra”, “Romance”, “Soukrome Poselvsti”, “A Day in the City: 7 Vignettes” and “Back Home Again in Indiana.”
In the finale for the day’s events, Lockhart joined with the faculty, students and community members to perform a number of tunes, from the slow and somber (“Irish Tune from County Derry”) to the light and fun (“Three Little Pigs”).
Lockhart shared that it was a good day and that “the students were enthusiastic, talented and fun to work with. Everyone was very nice and very kind.”
The Guest Artist Series will continue next week in two Jazz Ensemble performances with Bill Prince March 24 and 25.
