The chamber music theatre production of “Ain’t I a Woman!” was performed on Tuesday, March 4 in the SMSU Fine Arts Theatre. The lives of four powerful African American women were presented on stage. The performance featured actress Christy Hall, who portrayed historical figures throughout the hour and a half play.
Featured were novelist Zora Neale Hurston, folk artist Clementine Hunter, civil rights worker Fannie Lou Hamer, and abolitionist Sojourner Truth, whose poem entitled “Ain’t I a Woman” was the inspiration for the name of the play.

Accompanying Hall was music from The Core Ensemble, a three member group playing cello, piano, and percussion.

This event was sponsored by the History Club, the Women’s Studies Committee, the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, the Creative Writing Program, Access Opportunity Success, and the College of Arts, Letters & Sciences at Southwest Minnesota State University.
