Entering the William Whipple Art Gallery, one must leave the world of color behind and embrace the subtle, yet detailed black and white art of David Strom.
If you enjoy art and love the fine detail of a work, you can find it in the Whipple Gallery located next to the McFarland Library. David Strom, a Minn. native, uses pen and ink as his medium for a variety of pieces placed throughout the gallery. His work, alongside Florence Putterman, Nanni Menetti Francesco Martani and Mark Rowley, will be on display from Mar. 1 through Apr. 4. Gallery hours are listed below.
Several pieces have unique designs, mostly of black bins and silos against a white backdrop. These pieces include “Wallpaper Fortress”, “Open Sky”, “Large Bin Drawing Variation(s)”, “Bin Drawing Variation(s)”, “Winds & Bins”, “Large Bin Drawing”, “Couple at the Fence”, “Where Are We?”, “Twisted Road”, “Ground Sky” and many more.
Strom’s “Out My Window” and “Reflection” dominate the scene as the detailed designs of bins, silos, wind turbines, flowers and the continuous, floating elements of black and white jump off the paintings.
From a large canvas to small collages, Strom uses his pen and ink to create a wonderful exhibit of blacks, whites and the occasional gray.
The William Whipple Gallery is funded by SAFAC (Student Activity Fee Allocation Committee) and the SMSU Foundation.
