Many people have called the 2024 election one of the most important elections in history, and I’m willing to believe that. Many different topics are important to many different people. One such thing that is important to me is making sure that the United States does not have a dictator in office.
In early July when the Supreme Court ruled that if an act was labeled as a presidential act the sitting president would be immune. As I got into politics somewhat recently in the past election I remembered being genuinely scared to see where the country could be leading.
When it came to the insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, I was shocked to hear that this happened but genuinely thought the government would sort itself out as it usually does. This new Supreme Court ruling changes things immensely, the presidential acts could turn the country that originally fought against dictators around the world to soon be led by one.
As a straight white male, I probably have the least to lose in this election. However, for women, this election could take away their right to choose to have an abortion. Being unable to have access to this simple procedure has led to the death of multiple different women.
One of them was Nicole Thurman, a woman who lived in Georgia who was unable to get the help she needed and who tragically passed away. Every single person in this country should have access to care, especially when their life is threatened. The fact that people can support someone who set this problem in the first place scares me.
Not only women are fighting to be themselves but also people who are transgender. In the huge document of Project 2025, there are multiple different policies planned to be reversed. One such policy is removing gender-affirming healthcare. Directly from the authors of Project 2025; the Heritage Foundation had this to say about the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) had how trans people use the services.
These surgeries not only support the individual, but they support their families as well. Letting people be who they truly are is important for individuality and freedom of expression which our country fought for so long ago. These surgeries offer a mental strain off the person’s life and can even lead to less depression, anxiety, and suicide rates.
There are many different reasons why this election could be important for people. These are a few that stick out for me. Looking at the two candidates in this race my choice could not be clearer. I have voted for Kamala Harris.
While some of her policies, such as continuing the funding to Israel and her stance on immigration are too similar to Donald Trump’s, I disagree with.
I know if she is elected, my friends and family’s rights will still be protected after she is sworn in. This election is important; while not telling anyone how to vote, making your voice heard is important.
