I haven’t seen or read A Wrinkle in Time for years, so I went into the movie theatre with a pretty open mind on how this make of the story would be. I knew from commercials that the plot was about a moody young girl (Meg) who’s visited by three women of the universe to help her rescue her dad that went missing a few years ago.

Even though Meg is moody and struggling with school and friends, her personality seemed realistic to me—especially since she’s in junior high. She didn’t used to be this way until her dad went missing, which if my dad up and disappeared randomly, I’d probably have a change in my personality too.

Her negativity also gives her a chance for character development. Throughout the whole movie, the three women of the universe (Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Who) question if she was really the right person to bring. It’s her little brother, Charles Wallace, that continually brings light to her darkness and keeps the Mrs.’ Convinced that they need her.

By the end of the movie, Meg goes through a change in heart, which you can probably guess what brings that on. But, even with the change, she still ends up questioning the reasons behind what her father did. The producers did a good job at making Meg and her actions realistic for the situation.

Aside from the character development, I loved the theatrical side to this movie. The way different parts of the universe looked, what lived there and how the people talked or dressed were all different and interesting.

The three Mrs.’ had some really creative outfits too, and of course they changed each time they went to a new part of the universe. There was even a scene where me and my friends wondered how Mrs. Who was able to move with what she was wearing. 

The part about the darkness, which is what Meg has to eventually fight off, was relatable. They show how it affects everyone in different ways but also that it is conquerable. There really was a lot more to this movie than Meg trying to find her dad, and I enjoyed all of it.
