English Club members present work at Daily Grind reading

On Thursday, Jan. 26, English Club members headed to the Daily Grind to present some of their work. Nearly 30 people attended the public event.

“It’s a good experience to try and read in front of people,” English Club Member Kaleigh Farrelly said.

In addition to reading some of her work, Farrelly was also the emcee. Shortly after getting started, she welcomed everyone to come to an English Club meeting.

“I’m in English Club because I want to be a part of English activities,” Farrelly said.

Farrelly was not the only reader. Kristen Barnhardt was the first to read, with a nonfiction essay. She shared an experience she had in an All-Opportunities Wizard of Oz play, where she was cast as Dorothy.

Shawn Valez, McKenzie Swanson, and Caitlyn Sanow all read as well. Each are English Club members, who had pieces covering a range of topics.

Valez told listeners about how he had to write a gothic parody piece because of an activity he participated in at English Club. Swanson had a flash fiction to read, and Sanow read a short story that she has been perfecting for a few years. The crowd listening paid attention to each reader intently and with respect.

After these five students read their stories, there was an open mic. Anyone in the room was then able to read their own stories. There were four students who stepped forward at different times. One student recited her original poem, which she had published in grade school. Another read a nonfiction short story about her family. No reading was alike.

Once all open mic readers and English club readers were finished, the event ended. It was encouraged though, for listeners to give feedback to writers. A big thanks was given to the Daily Grind for continuing to allow the English Club to have this event at their location.

Students who are interested in English Club should contact Professor of English Marianne Zarzana to find out about the next meetings, and events that are taking place.
