Cole Scheller Appointed New PR Coordinator
In spring 2015, Cole Scheller, an SMSU junior studying communications with a minor in public relations, was elected to the position of Public Relations Coordinator for the SMSU Student Government.
Scheller, who has a wide range of duties, started his position this fall. He will be responsible for organizing many different events in collaboration with the community. Scheller is responsible for events such as Red Cross blood drives, sporting events, and any organizations looking to rent a table in the school.
“We have a lot of things that tie in [to the community,]” Scheller said. “Sporting is the biggest way we encompass the community.”
Scheller also cited SMSU theatrical productions as a force that brings the campus and Marshall community together.
He organizes both of the Red Cross blood drives. A fall drive occurred on Oct. 14 and the other drive is coming up in the spring.
“We had a better turnout this year,” Scheller said, referring to the blood drive. He was proud that 75 people donated blood at the event that he organized in the fall.
Scheller also runs the social media account for SMSU’s student association. He is excited about the opportunity.
“I want to post paragraphs with more direct messages on social media to let students know what’s going on,” Scheller said.
He feels that shorter Facebook posts that link off to another page for the full information do not capture student’s interest, and wants to install a new way of social networking for his age that students are more likely to interact with. Scheller also started a Snapchat for admissions with the username smsuadmissions.
Scheller is excited to work with companies in Marshall as he takes on this new position.
