If you’re like me, you were super excited for the release of the newest game in the Super Smash Bros series by Nintendo. They’ve had a reputation of being amazing fighting games in their own right, while also doing great service to die-hard Nintendo fans. The games have been coming out for every major Nintendo system release since 1999, with one game per console. But the difference with the new Super Smash Bros (SSB)games is that they’re split into two games, Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Super Smash Bros for 3DS. The Wii U version won’t be out until next month (Nov. 21) but the 3DS version just came out quite recently (Sept. 13), and, honestly, it’s better than expected.
Many people were skeptical of seeing a SSB game on a handheld console, since it hadn’t been done before, and weren’t sure it would hold up to the same level of quality. But playing the game on the basic versus mode has been a blast and feels just like the old games. Almost better, in fact, compared to some previous installments. One of the major differences is the exclusion of a story mode, which I’m sure they’re saving for the Wii U release. As a sort of replacement, some modes that would normally be locked at first are open immediately, like All Star mode, while also introducing new modes.
One of these is Smash Mode, where you run around a battle area filled with small enemies trying to kill them. You try to find a treasure chest to get bonuses that you can use in an up-and-coming battle between actual fighters. You get around five minutes to do this, and some of the bonuses include jumping, speed, toughness, and attack.
With the introductions of new modes, solid game play, and of course new characters, this SSB has earned its right to be among its brethren in my collection. This version even has a one-up on its predecessors, since it’s the first mobile smash game. If you played any of the previous SSB games and loved them, then don’t waste any time getting this game.
