The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang softball team split a pair of games with the Northern State Wolves on Saturday, April 26 in Aberdeen, S.D. The Mustangs shutout the Wolves in game one with a score of 5-0, but fell 9-1 in game two to conclude the season.
In game one, Elissa Reinsma led the Mustangs with three hits from the lead- off spot. Reinsma finished 3 for 4 and scored a run and an RBI. In the last three games, Reinsma has recorded nine hits.
Also pitching in for the Mustangs were Jazmyne Neely and Katelyn Kalkman, who both recorded RBIs. Neely finished 1 for 3 at the plate, while Kalkman finished 0 for 3.
Rachel Hoeppner, the starting pitcher for the Mustangs, allowed six hits throughout seven full innings. Hoeppner walked just two and struck out two. This marks Hoeppner’s second complete game of the season. Hoeppner finishes the season with a record of 9-13.
The Mustangs finished game two with just five hits, all of which were from different hitters. Reinsma went 0 for 3 at the place, but recorded the Mustangs’ only RBI in the game.
Freshman pitcher Alex O’Connor allowed 11 hits and eight runs, only three of which were earned. O’Connor walked one hitter and struck out two. Upon the conclusion of the season, O’Connor finishes with a record of 6-17 and made appearances in 27 games. In game two, Hoeppner threw one inning of relief, allowing four hits and one earned run.
Upon the conclusion of the season, the Mustangs finish with an overall record of 15-30-1 and 12-17-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. It marks the last game for seniors Kaley Searcy and Jennifer Johnson.
