On March 24, 2014, Kevin Zepper read poems to the students and staff of Southwest Minnesota State University. While some poems didn’t belong to a collection, others came from Zeppers’ chapbooks of poetry, his newest one being Sugar Town, and an unpublished work in progress called Ghost Town. Zeppers’ poetry stretches from the emotional to the hilarious, several times I was laughing and smiling through most of his reading, but when he wanted to be serious, he did it well. With poems like “Big Mother Boots” and “Java Dive,” we were brought on a ride through metaphors, jokes, childhood, and adulthood. Poems like “Jude” and The Writing Prompt” remind us just how serious Zepper can get, and how there are hard times in everyone’s life. Not only did Zepper read us traditional poetry, but he also dabbled into slam poetry as well, which he rocked completely. Kevin Zepper is a reminder that even though poetry isn’t something that most people don’t pay attention to, it is in fact a work of art that is meant to be respected.
