Twenty-eight percent shooting plagued the Southwest Minnesota State University Mustang women’s basketball team as they fell to No. 22 Northern State 73-45, putting an end to the Mustangs’ tournament hopes.
Within the first seven minutes of play, the Wolves jumped to a 15-5 lead. The Wolves continued to cruise through the first half, leaving the court for halftime with a score of 34-16 on the board. However, the Wolves led by as much as 20 points during the half.
The second half was a mirror image of the first half for both teams. The Wolves built up an early 15-5 run to build their lead to 49-21. Though the Mustangs put together a few brief scoring runs, they simply could not overcome the Wolves. The Wolves led by as much as 32 points during the second half.
The Mustangs were paced by Ellen Degler, who scored 12 points and shot 50 percent. Degler pulled down six rebounds and grabbed five steals. Though Allison Nagel was scoreless throughout the game, she ends the season as the Mustangs’ leading scorer. As a team, the Mustangs shot 28 percent from the floor and made 14 of 50 field goals.
With the loss, the Mustangs ended their season with an overall record of 4-23. The Mustangs have an overall tournament record of 8-10.
