If you have talked to me for five minutes, you know that I am in love with the DeLorean DMC-12. It’s a car I will never shut up about. The sleek design and the luster of the car’s stainless steel exterior alone are more attractive to me than your average supermodel. I love the car and everything related to it, especially the classic 80’s movie “Back to the Future” (BTTF), a film that tells of the adventures of Marty McFly and his scientist friend Emmett Brown as they travel through time in a modified DeLorean.
Somedays I open Facebook and see a post mistating information about BTTF, thus disrespecting the franchise. By association, the poster has also disrespected DeLoreans, and disrespect toward DeLoreans is personal offense to me. That’s why as I see these posts, my fingers start to sweat. My cheeks flush red with rage as my brain releases a wave of adrenaline and my eyes synchronously burst into literal raging infernos of fire. My fingers collide callously against the plastic of my keyboard with the strength of a thousand internet heroes and my legs flinch uncontrollably with matchless animosity. I smash a comment into the posters facebook feed, telling them of their transgressions, usually through broken leetspeek, all while making sure to insult everything they hold dear in their lives. Once I crush the enter key beneath the power of my pointer finger, I spit flames from my mouth and inhale so violently that raw adrenaline jettisons out my ears. I have done internet justice.
If you aren’t careful, you could be on the receiving side of such a verbal siege. So educate yourself; The date you’re looking for is Oct. 21, 2015.
Despite my best attempts to be over the top, I would like to clarify I am being facetious. I do not actually spend my time posting hate comments on social networking over someone’s arrogance toward classic cinema. But with that said, If you’ve used social networking at all lately, you’ve still likely seen one of the photos I am referring to. It shows Marty Mcfly staring off into the distance, with some text explaining how today is the day that Marty time travelled to from 1985, with the time readout on the dash of his DeLorean reading the present day.
One odd thing I noticed about these photos is despite the fact that they generally manage to appear at least weekly, the date is always accurate. The DeLorean’s dash always manages to read the date you find the photo which brings up a question: Is there just a league of people photoshopping incorrect dates onto the DeLorean’s dashboard in order to trick people? The answer is, unfortunately, yes.
Tumblr user “martymcflyinthefuture” has a very vast profile that is dedicated to the cause. The profile is 15 pages of nothing but dated photoshops of the DeLorean’s time readout, with a new one being posted to match the current date every single day.
With a year and a half left until the actual date of Marty arriving in our time, it seems this hoax will likely continue for quite some time. But you don’t have to fall for it anymore. Next time you are thinking about clicking ‘retweet’ on that picture of a photoshopped DeLorean dashboard, remember the date Oct. 21, 2015. It might just save you from a mob of maniacal, rabid BTTF fans, myself more than likely among them.
